Manage Your Crop’s Limiting Nutrients with Smart Nutrition MAP+MST

Nutrient management plans and fertilizer programs are more than budget lines, they are strategic investments that can support greater on-farm sustainability, productivity and profitability. If you’re considering cutting back on your fertilizer inputs this year to save costs in the short term, it’s important to weigh the long-term impacts on soil health, crop yield and overall profitability. Blindly cutting back on your fertilizer program could cost you more than you could save. Let’s take a closer look at how this works and why nutrient management remains a critical investment, even with a tight budget.

Liebig’s Law of the Minimum

Liebig’s law of the minimum states that the yield you can achieve is dictated by your field’s most limiting nutrient. If just one nutrient is deficient, a crop’s quality and yield potential will suffer, even with abundant access to other nutrients. This concept helps us better understand our nutrient management plans and fertilizer programs and how your yield potential can be determined by your field’s most deficient nutrient rather than the total amount of available nutrients.¹

Graphic demonstrating the concept of Liebigs Law using the dam theory

Liebig’s law of the minimum is best represented using the concept of a dam. The water being held back by the dam represents a field’s yield potential. Any holes in the dam represent yield-limiting nutrients that decrease your yield potential as they leak. The goal is to identify which holes are leaking and ‘plug them’ in order to maintain as much yield as possible. While nitrogen is often one of the most common leaks growers rush to plug, simply plugging the nitrogen leak without considering other leaks in the dam can lead to considerable yield loss. As shown in the illustration above, even when a nitrogen leak has been securely ‘plugged,’ other leaks limit your yield potential. To get the most out of your fertilizer investment, it is important to address as many leaks as possible.

To maximize your field’s yield potential, all the nutrients in your nutrient management program must be supplied at 100% sufficiency. While you may want to focus solely on N-P-K products under tight budgets, Liebig’s law demonstrates how one deficiency will decrease yield and crop quality regardless of how much nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium you apply. For example, applying phosphorus to a field that’s deficient in magnesium will have no positive effect on yield. It is only when both nutrients are applied at adequate levels that yields are increased and maximized. The same has been demonstrated with nitrogen and sulfur.²

How does this apply to allocating your fertilizer dollars? Blindly cutting back on nutrients can cut right into your yield. While your crops will respond to applications of specific nutrients, the yield you can achieve may be limited by the inadequacy of other nutrients. A proper soil test can help you determine all the essential leaks you need to plug to maximize yield this season.
