Use in Canola

Pick a Crop

Every type of phosphorus and sulfur fertilizer is applied and handled differently. These general use recommendations for Smart Nutrition MAP+MST are based on optimal growing conditions. Your specific conditions and goals should be considered to achieve best results. Always ask your retailer for recommendations.

Proper nutrition is key for maximizing canola yields. Both phosphorus and sulfur are essential macronutrients. Phosphorus is involved in many plant growth processes, from energy storage from photosynthesis and metabolism of carbohydrates to plant structure. Sulfur is required, in conjunction with nitrogen, to produce certain proteins derived from sulfur containing amino acids as well as other functions within the plant.

Since phosphorus is relatively immobile in soil, fall or early spring applications are both viable options under many soil conditions. Sulfur management can present application timing challenges with some sulfur fertilizers due to high potential of sulfate leaching in high rainfall environments and/or coarse textured soils. Season long uptake of sulfur requires sulfur availability to remain high to maximize yields. Sulfur applications are generally made in fall or early spring before the crop has reached maximum uptake levels. High precipitation events that occur after application of many salt sulfate fertilizer sources can result in significant loss from the rooting zone, leaving crops with limited nutrient availability. Smart Nutrition MAP+MST acts as a slow release sulfur fertilizer, allowing for fall or spring application with season long sulfur availability compared to conventional sources.

Canadian Prairies and Upper Northern U.S. Tier States

Canola grown at northern latitudes is subject to cooler soils and shorter growing seasons. For these reasons, timing of nutrient availability to the plant is essential to maximize canola production. Canola response to sulfur application is common in many areas that experience cooler soil temperatures due to slower soil mineralization – microbial driven soil process where soil organic matter is broken down resulting in plant available nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Canola production in fields with low soil organic matter or coarse textured soils could benefit from supplemental application of sulfur with fertilizers such as Smart Nutrition MAP+MST.

Spring Management

  • Pre-plant broadcast and incorporated
  • Seed row placed – Smart Nutrition MAP+MST has a lower calculated salt index than many other commonly used sulfur fertilizer sources, allowing for superior seed row safety.
  • Heavy crop residue may restrict soil to fertilizer contact when applied as broadcast without incorporation, which will inhibit the oxidation of elemental sulfur as Micronized Sulfur Technology (MST).
  • Post emergent application may result in delayed sulfur availability for Smart Nutrition MAP+MST, as it relates to crop sulfur uptake demand for annual spring seeded crops.
  • For early spring applications, Smart Nutrition MAP+MST provides greater protection against sulfur loss, as opposed to conventional sulfate-sulfur fertilizer sources applied at the same time.
  • Bulk blend Smart Nutrition MAP+MST with other fertilizer sources, like potash, to achieve adequate nutrition.
  • A fertilizer blend of 75/25 or 50/50 of Smart Nutrition MAP+MST to AMS is recommended at more northern latitudes where cooler soil temperatures prevail.

Fall Management

  • Broadcast and incorporated
  • Heavy crop residue may restrict soil to fertilizer contact when applied as broadcast without incorporation, which will inhibit the oxidation of elemental sulfur as Micronized Sulfur Technology (MST).
  • For fall applications, Smart Nutrition MAP+MST provides greater protection against sulfur loss, as opposed to conventional sulfate-sulfur fertilizer sources applied at the same time.
  • Bulk blend Smart Nutrition MAP+MST with other fertilizer sources, like potash, to achieve adequate nutrition.
