Meet Your Crop’s Phosphate Needs With Smart Nutrition™ MAP+MST®

Smart Nutrition™ MAP+MST® is a homogeneous fertilizer with each granule containing an analysis of 9-43-0-16. While the micronized sulfur technology (MST) is the most exciting part of this new product, the MAP (typically 11-52-0) component is what many growers, particularity in Western Canada, will be drawn to.

“Phosphate is hugely important to our crops in Western Canada. With our cool conditions, having some seed-placed phosphate is very important. With a product like this being able to blend in that elemental sulfur, it just provides another opportunity to provide more nutrition for our crops in one granule,” says Scott Anderson, manager of agronomic services for Nutrien Ag Solutions in Northwest Saskatchewan.

Phosphate fertilizer has traditionally been a part of grower’s fertilizer programs, but the need for the addition of sulfur has evolved over the past decade. With the lack of sulfur available from environmental factors, growers should now consider adding sulfur to their yearly fertilizer program. When looking at traditional MAP versus Smart Nutrition MAP+MST, “It’s really that [growers] are getting this micronized elemental as a component of their phosphate, but that micronized elemental isn’t compromising the seed safety of the MAP component,” explains Brianna Lummerding, manager of agronomic services for Nutrien Ag Solutions in Northeast Saskatchewan. “[Growers] are still able to put on those seed safe rates of phosphate fertilizer while adding that bump of micronized elemental to either supplement or complement additional sulfur that they are already doing.”

Compared to other multi-nutrient fertilizers, the high phosphorus and sulfur nutrient density in Smart Nutrition MAP+MST means lower fertilizer volumes are needed to meet nutrient requirements. That means less time applying, and less storage space in the bin.

So how should Smart Nutrition MAP+MST be used? This product is going to be a replacement for your traditional MAP. Application recommendations vary by geography and crop, but in general it’s a great fit for pre-plant, seed row placed and fall applications.
